In 2007, authorities rescued 51 Pit Bulls from a dogfighting operation run by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick. These dogs endured unimaginable cruelty—beaten, electrocuted, hung, drowned, and forced to fight.

Despite their trauma, 48 of these brave dogs survived. With love and patience from rescue organizations and dedicated families, these Pit Bulls went on to live the lives they truly deserved.

One of those survivors was Frodo, who passed away on December 18, 2021, at the age of 15. Frodo spent the last 14 years of his life being “pampered like a prince” after enduring hell at Vick’s compound.

A Life Well Lived

BAD RAP, an Oakland-based nonprofit instrumental in advocating for and rehabilitating the “Vick” dogs, announced Frodo’s passing in a heartfelt Facebook post:

“To Frodo - We all adored him. He was one of the most valiant survivors we’ve ever met.”

Frodo passed away surrounded by love, enjoying a final feast of steak while his adoptive family, Kim Ramirez and her daughter Dominique, tearfully said goodbye. His veterinarian, Dr. Williams, lovingly cared for him until the very end.

From Trauma to Triumph

Frodo’s story became a symbol of resilience and the power of compassion. Once terrified and timid, Frodo’s journey highlighted the importance of patience and kindness in helping abused animals heal.

BAD RAP noted that Frodo’s early trauma required extra care:

“Frodo demonstrated that younger dogs rescued from cruelty incidents need early socialization to grow up strong and fearless. He spent six long and damaging months in solitary confinement before being rescued.”

Frodo’s adoptive mom recalled his struggles:

“The sound of anything mechanical scared him. Ceiling fans terrified him. If I opened a closet, he’d run. Even microwave popcorn seemed to remind him of gunfire. He may not have seen the fights, but he surely heard them.”

Despite these fears, Frodo found safety and love with the Ramirez family, who cherished him unconditionally. When his legs began to fail, they gently transported him in a stroller, ensuring his golden years were filled with care and comfort.

The Legacy of the Vick Dogs

Frodo was one of the last surviving dogs from Vick’s dogfighting ring. Thirteen of the “Vick” dogs were still alive as of 2019. In 2021, Frodo joined other beloved survivors, including Jonny Justice and Uba, who passed away earlier that year.

These dogs proved that even after severe abuse, love and rehabilitation can create a new future. Their journey changed public perceptions about Pit Bulls and the rehabilitation of abused animals.

A Final Goodbye

Frodo’s life was a testament to the resilience of the spirit and the transformative power of love. Though he has crossed the rainbow bridge, his legacy will continue to inspire animal advocates worldwide.

Rest in peace, sweet Frodo. You will forever be remembered as a true survivor and a symbol of hope for all animals in need.
