Abandoned on a beach in Newport, California, Henry’s life had taken a heartbreaking turn. Once part of a family, the golden retriever was left homeless, carrying a staggering 46-pound tumor that made even walking unbearable.

Thankfully, a kind passerby spotted Henry struggling along the shore and called Valerie Schomburg of Newport Beach Animal Control (NBAC). Rescuers, accustomed to seeing animals in poor condition, were still shocked by Henry’s state. The tumor, so massive it rested on his right front leg, made every step an ordeal, compounding his difficulty in finding food and shelter.

Yet, despite his suffering, Henry’s spirit remained unbroken. He greeted everyone with a wagging tail and a heart full of love, showering those who came near him with slobbery kisses.

Determined to give Henry a fighting chance, Schomburg worked tirelessly to secure funding for his surgery. Grants and donations poured in, and soon Henry underwent the life-saving operation. The tumor, though enormous, had thankfully not spread.

The surgery was a success. Without the tumor weighing him down, Henry’s transformation was astonishing. He now weighed a healthy 78 pounds and could walk freely for the first time in what must have felt like forever. He moved into a loving foster home through the Newport Beach Animal Shelter, where he experienced joy, comfort, and the love he had been denied for so long.

Henry’s story captured hearts around the world. As his tale spread, admirers sent gifts, treats, and messages of support. Henry became a local hero, embodying resilience and the power of compassion.

Though Henry passed away peacefully in his sleep, his final chapter was filled with happiness, care, and the love he had always deserved. His ever-present smile and wagging tail left an indelible mark on those who met him, reminding everyone of the enduring strength of the canine spirit.

In the wake of Henry’s passing, justice is being pursued. Authorities identified Henry’s previous owner, who now faces charges from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Henry’s legacy lives on as a testament to hope and the impact kindness can have. Rest easy, sweet Henry — you were loved to the very end
