Mario Rodriguez, a truck driver with a soft spot for pit bulls, never imagined that a single photo could change his life. But that’s exactly what happened when he saw a picture of Hickory, a sweet pit bull with a radiant smile. Sadly, Hickory was on the euthanasia list at the Animal Care Center Shelter in New York, and time was running out.

For Mario, pit bulls were more than just dogs — they were family. “I grew up with this breed. My family raised them, and I even raised my kids alongside them. They’re incredibly loving,” he shared.
Though Mario was working thousands of miles away in California, he refused to let Hickory lose his chance at life. With determination and a few calls to his workplace, Mario managed to adjust his truck route to head toward New York — a journey spanning nearly 2,800 miles and almost two non-stop days of driving.
To ensure Hickory would still be there when he arrived, Mario called the shelter every single day. “By the third day, they recognized my number and would say, ‘Yes, Mario, he’s still here,’” he laughed.
When Mario finally arrived, the connection between him and Hickory was instantaneous. “The moment I told him we were going, he started wagging his tail like crazy. He jumped on me and couldn’t stop kissing me,” Mario recalled.
Back home, Hickory seamlessly fit in with Mario’s two other pit bulls, but one thing became clear — Hickory didn’t want to be apart from his rescuer. So Mario made the perfect decision: Hickory would join him on the road as his co-pilot.
Now, Hickory enjoys adventures alongside Mario, experiencing life from the passenger seat of a truck. “We stop at parks and farms along the way. He’s barked at cows and met horses. He’s loving every moment of it,” Mario said.
At night, Hickory has his own cozy bed in the truck, and during the day, he shares unforgettable moments with Mario as they travel the country.
Hickory and Mario were truly meant to find each other, and their story is a heartwarming reminder of the bond between humans and animals.
