Big Top, a loyal companion for over a decade, recently faced a heartbreaking turn of events. After his beloved owner passed away, this sweet senior dog found himself back at the shelter he was once rescued from, uncertain of what his future held.
Big Top had lived through some tough times, but nothing could prepare him for this loss. After years in a loving home, he was suddenly alone and back in Austin Pets Alive! (APA), the very place that had saved him as a puppy. Now at twelve years old, Big Top was starting a new, unexpected chapter in his life.
A Life of Challenges and Triumphs
Before finding his forever home, Big Top’s life started in the harshest of circumstances. He and his two surviving siblings were found abandoned in a dumpster, covered in ants and struggling to survive. Thankfully, Austin Pets Alive! stepped in and rescued the tiny puppies, offering them a second chance.
"Big Top’s early days were tough," APA shared in an Instagram post. "He was found in a dumpster with his siblings, but soon enough, he was adopted into a loving home where he spent nearly 11 amazing years with his dad."
For over a decade, Big Top thrived with his owner, enjoying a peaceful and happy life. But everything changed when his owner passed away, leaving Big Top heartbroken and back at APA.
Celebrating Big Top’s Twelfth Birthday
The staff at APA wanted to make Big Top’s transition as smooth as possible. Knowing his twelfth birthday was approaching, they decided to surprise him with a special celebration, bringing a little joy to his world during such a difficult time.
A video posted by APA captured the heartwarming moment Big Top entered a festively decorated room, tail wagging as his caregivers greeted him. To top it off, Big Top was given his very own birthday hat! It was clear from his happy expression and wagging tail that he was thrilled to be the center of attention.
The shelter staff didn’t stop there. After serenading him with a birthday song, Big Top was treated to a delicious dog-friendly cake and a bag filled with toys. He basked in the love and belly rubs, savoring every moment of his special day.
A Hope for Big Top’s Golden Years
Though Big Top enjoyed his birthday celebration, the shelter staff knew he needed more than just a party. Their biggest hope was to find him a loving home where he could spend his retirement years in comfort.
According to APA, Big Top is the perfect companion for a family looking for a relaxed, low-maintenance dog. “All Big Top wants is to sleep by your feet while you work or watch TV. He’s affectionate and loves chin scratches, rewarding you with a sweet kiss in return.”
At this stage in his life, Big Top would do best as the only pet in a quiet home where his new family can give him the peace and rest he deserves. He’s still grieving the loss of his owner, and the shelter staff are committed to ensuring his final years are filled with love and comfort.
“We don’t know how much longer Big Top has, but we’re doing everything we can to make sure his remaining time is filled with care and happiness,” APA shared.
With fingers crossed and hearts hopeful, everyone at the shelter is rooting for Big Top to find his forever family soon. He deserves a peaceful, loving home to enjoy his golden years. Here’s to hoping this sweet senior dog finds the perfect match!
