Sadly, the world continues to fail countless puppies, leaving many abandoned and neglected. The alarming rise in the number of homeless dogs has led to overflowing shelters, creating an urgent need for compassionate individuals dedicated to helping these animals find loving homes.
Rescue at Last
One such hero is Donna Lochman, a passionate rescuer from St. Louis who has made it her mission to ensure every dog feels the love they deserve. Recently, she received a call that would change the life of an abandoned Doberman.
When a neighbor spotted a forlorn Doberman wandering in a backyard, they immediately contacted Donna, the Chief Life-Saving Officer with the Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL). Alarmed by the report, Donna swiftly headed to the location.
“We don’t see a lot of Dobermans. I was kind of surprised. I don’t know if he was thrown into this neighborhood or what. But he was in a rough state,” Donna recounted to The Dodo.
To Donna’s relief, the gentle giant didn’t resist the leash, as if he knew he was finally being rescued. He was so weak that he couldn’t jump into the car, but Donna lovingly lifted him and secured him inside. With Albus on board, the team made their way to the St. Louis rescue shelter.
At the Shelter
Upon arrival at SRSL, the staff instantly fell in love with Albus. Their hearts broke at the sight of this incredibly sweet dog, who eagerly sought out hugs and pets whenever he had the chance.
A thorough examination revealed a large, open tumor, an upper respiratory tract infection, severe malnourishment, and a complete lack of appetite. The shelter staff did everything in their power to treat him, but they knew that what Albus truly needed was a loving foster home where he could receive individual attention and care.
Fortunately, that’s exactly what he got. “He wasn’t here long before the foster family came to pick him up,” Donna said.
The Brand New Puppy
Time spent with his foster family worked wonders for Albus. In just four months, he transformed from a frail, sickly dog into a vibrant and healthy pup. “He looks like a Doberman now, with no ribs showing. His appetite is great, and he is getting more comfortable with touch. He was always affectionate, but he didn’t like to be touched in certain places. He learns new things every day, even though he is very excited and easily distracted,” Donna shared.
The remarkable transformation Albus underwent—from severe malnutrition to a happy, healthy dog—is a testament to the dedication, love, and care provided by wonderful human beings. Without their support, who knows what might have happened to this sweet boy.
