After an incredible rescue captured on television, one woman decided to give a stray dog, saved from the brink of death in the icy waters of Lake Michigan, a loving forever home.
The white dog, now affectionately named Michigan, had been struggling to survive after slipping through the frozen lake’s ice. He had been watching a passerby, hoping for help, when the concerned woman dialed 911. Within moments, police arrived and pulled Michigan from the freezing water, saving his life just in time.
Michigan was taken in by the Wisconsin Humane Society, where he was treated for hypothermia. As the shelter tried to locate his original owners, it became clear that no one was coming forward to claim him. News of Michigan's rescue quickly spread, and soon, hundreds of adoption applications poured in from people eager to give him a second chance.
Among the many hopefuls was Brenda Thompson, who had been following Michigan's story closely. The moment she saw his rescue on the news, she felt a deep connection to the dog.
“I rushed to the shelter right after seeing him on TV,” Brenda told TMJ4. “I couldn’t stop thinking about him, so I came here almost every day to check on him.”
After carefully reviewing all the applications, the Wisconsin Humane Society selected Brenda as Michigan's new mom. She was overjoyed to welcome the brave pup into her home and give him the love and care he deserved.
Now that Michigan has officially been adopted, Brenda is eager to begin their new life together. “My first plan is to take him on a long, leisurely walk,” she said. “I’ve set up his bed, bought him toys and bowls. He’s all set. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
Michigan won’t be alone in his new home either—he’ll have a sister to play with. Brenda had previously adopted a black Lab in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and now Michigan will have a furry companion by his side.
Michigan’s story is one of hope, resilience, and new beginnings, and Brenda is ready to give him the wonderful life he’s always deserved.
