Autumn isn't just about pumpkins and squash—it's also prime apple season! Gone to the Snow Dogs recently took their huskies to an apple farm to pick fresh apples for making delicious crunchy apple chips, a perfect treat for your pups.
Here's how you can make your own apple chips at home!
What You’ll Need:
- A food dehydrator
- Fresh apples (any variety)
- Water
- Lemon juice
Instructions:
Prepare the Apples
Start by peeling and coring the apples. You can use any apple variety, and if your dog enjoys it, feel free to leave the peel on. Just be sure to remove the cores, as apple seeds can be harmful to dogs. The team at Gone to the Snow Dogs used a handy Pautou Apple Peeler, which peels, cores, and slices the apples in one go, but a regular peeler and knife work just as well.Soak the Slices
Fill a bowl with water and add a little lemon juice. Soaking the apple slices in this mixture helps prevent them from browning. While this step is more for aesthetics (the dogs won’t mind brown apple slices!), it keeps the chips looking fresh.Dehydrate the Apples
After the slices have soaked for a bit, lay them in your food dehydrator. Follow the dehydrator’s instructions for drying times. If you're making some for yourself, you can sprinkle sugar and cinnamon for extra flavor—but keep the seasoning away from the dog-friendly batch.Serve & Store
Once dried, your crunchy apple chips are ready! These tasty treats will be loved by most dogs and can be stored in the fridge for a couple of weeks—if they last that long!
Your furry friend will appreciate this healthy and delicious autumn snack!
