Two years ago in San Bernardino, Faith Easdale, a dedicated rescuer, was on a long drive after saving another dog in danger when she noticed the tiniest, trembling dog standing alone on a street corner. He was painfully thin—abandoned, lost, or worse, left to fend for himself with no one to care if he survived.
In the busy neighborhood, a man was nearby fixing his car. Faith asked if he knew anything about the dog, or if it might be his. He glanced at the dog, shook his head, and went back to his work, unconcerned. The frightened pup then darted away, squeezing through the bars of a fence into a yard. Faith knocked on the door of the house, hoping someone there might claim him. But the woman inside said the dog had been sitting on the corner for days, and she had no idea where he had come from.
Faith continued her search, approaching another man standing beside his truck. As she asked him if he knew about the dog, the tiny creature darted under the vehicle. The man shook his head and grabbed a pole, preparing to poke the dog out from under his truck. Alarmed, Faith quickly asked him not to scare the dog, fearing he might run into the busy street.
And just as she feared, the dog bolted out from under the truck, straight toward the road. But then, something amazing happened. Faith knelt down, expecting she’d need a trap to catch him, which she didn’t have with her. To her surprise, the dog slowly approached her, his fear momentarily replaced by trust. She gently picked him up, placed him in a small zip-up crate, and tucked him safely inside.
Soon after, the poor little dog, clearly starved, vomited what looked like roadkill. This pup had been fighting to survive on his own, scavenging whatever he could find. Back at her home, Faith gave him a warm bath, washing away the dirt and grime, while discovering scars and sores on his body that hinted at a painful past. But now, wrapped in a cozy blanket and with a full belly, he was finally safe.
Reflecting on that day, Faith felt grateful. She had taken that road for a reason and was able to save a precious life. Thanks to rescuers like Faith, there’s hope for many frightened, abandoned dogs. Sharing their stories reminds us of the joy in every life saved.
