INDIA - Dog Waits Outside Morgue for Four Months, Unaware of Owner's Passing
In a touching tale that has captured the hearts of many in India, a dog has been waiting outside a morgue for four months, steadfastly hoping for the return of its owner.
Staff at a hospital in Kannur, Kerala, reported that the dog arrived at the facility with its owner about four months ago. Sadly, just a few days later, the owner passed away.
In the days following the death, the dog refused to eat or drink. During the day, it wandered the hospital grounds, but at night, it would return to lie down outside the morgue. "The dog followed its owner when he was brought to the morgue, and it has stayed here ever since. It's possible that the body was taken out through a different exit, so the dog still believes its owner is in the building. We have yet to identify the owner," a hospital staff member shared.
Currently, the hospital staff are the ones taking care of the dog, which has been renamed Ramu. It seems to have an unshakable belief that its owner is still in the hospital, showing no desire to leave.
Dr. Maya Gopalakrishnan, a physician at the hospital, has taken it upon herself to cook and bring food for Ramu every day. She revealed that the dog prefers eggs and fish over rice. "For four months now, Ramu has remained loyal to its spot, refusing to go anywhere else. It also shows no interest in mingling with the stray dogs around the hospital. Perhaps it still hopes for its owner’s return," Dr. Maya noted.
Ramu's story has drawn comparisons to the faithful dog Hachiko from Japan. Many have expressed that this is why they cherish dogs as beloved companions in their homes.
"As a dog, it loves its owner more than itself. It may be just a part of your life, but you are its whole world," commented a Twitter user.
