Meet Grace — a sweet senior dog who shows that true love doesn’t need to be seen to be fully felt.
A few years ago, Grace, now 12, was diagnosed with a painful eye condition that eventually led to her losing her sight. On the advice of her vet, both of Grace’s eyes were removed to relieve her suffering.
“We knew it was the best decision to keep Grace comfortable and pain-free,” said Shelby Salmela, Grace’s owner, in an interview
Even without her sight, Grace never lost her way when it came to matters of the heart.
While Grace clearly adores Salmela, she’s always shared an extra special bond with Salmela's mother, Grace’s beloved grandma. After the surgery, that bond remained as strong as ever.
Before losing her vision, Grace would joyfully run into Grandma’s arms. Now, even without sight, Grace still lights up with excitement whenever Grandma visits.
“It’s the cutest thing to see how thrilled Grace gets when she realizes the person at the door is her GG,” Salmela shared.
Grace’s reaction to her grandma’s embrace proves that while her world may seem dark, it’s still filled with the brightness of love. Though she may be missing one of her senses, her capacity to love remains as strong as ever.
In some ways, not being able to see when Grandma is away only makes her feel even closer to her in spirit.
“Grace’s grandma moved out of state three years ago, so we only get to see her about six times a year,” Salmela explained. “But Grace is incredibly attached to her. We FaceTime daily, and even when she hears my mom’s voice on the call, she gets excited.”
