Every year, the Chicago Marathon brings together thousands of runners chasing personal triumphs, pushing their bodies to the absolute limit. Among the sea of athletes pounding the pavement this past Sunday was Sarah Bohan. She wasn't just running for herself, though—she was representing PAWS Chicago, a prominent local animal rescue organization, raising vital funds to give homeless pets a second chance. But as fate would have it, Sarah’s mission to save animals was about to get incredibly hands-on.
An Unexpected Cry for Help Mid-Race
Sarah was absolutely crushing her run. Nearing the final, exhausting stretch of the grueling 26.2-mile course, she was on track to secure her personal best marathon time ever. The finish line was within reach, and months of hard work were about to pay off in a big way. But then, everything changed in a heartbeat.
"I happened to be running on the left side of the road nearest the sidewalk and entered a tunnel," Sarah shared in an interview. That is when she heard it—a faint, desperate sound cutting through the roar of the crowd. Looking over, she spotted a tiny, incredibly fluffy kitten, trembling and crying on the cold concrete.
Choosing Love Over a Personal Record
For most runners, stopping near the finish line of a major marathon is unthinkable. Seconds matter, and pausing even for a moment can ruin months of dedicated training. But for Sarah, there was no internal debate. Her instincts as an animal lover took over instantly.
"I didn’t even think twice," Sarah recalled. "I scooped up the cat." Just like that, the race clock stopped mattering. A tiny, defenseless life was in danger, and Sarah was determined to protect it.
A Gentle Walk to Safety
With the terrified kitten cradled securely in her arms, Sarah knew she couldn't keep running at her previous pace; the bouncing would terrify the poor baby even more. She immediately slowed down to a gentle walk, dedicating all her energy to soothing her new little companion.
"That cat became my responsibility," Sarah explained warmly. "I needed to give it the love it deserved."
For about a mile, the marathon runner walked the course, comforting the kitten and searching the sidelines for help. Thankfully, her compassion acted like a magnet. Some incredible spectators on the sidelines noticed the runner carrying a kitten and stepped forward.
As luck would have it, these spectators were devoted cat owners themselves. They offered to take the sweet kitten, promising to give him a safe, loving home. "I didn’t know them," Sarah admitted. "They just came forward and said they have cats of their own and will give this little baby love. I trusted them based on our very brief interaction."
Crossing the Finish Line with a Full Heart
With the kitten officially safe and sound in the arms of his new guardians, Sarah was able to pick up her pace once again and head toward the finish line. She may have missed out on her personal record, but she walked away with something infinitely better: the knowledge that she saved a life when it mattered most.
Reflecting on the whirlwind day, Sarah has absolutely zero regrets about her detour. "I was just concerned about this cat's well-being and was not going to run at all until I found it a home," she said. Now that is what we call a true champion!
