The work of an animal rescuer is filled with joy, but also heartbreak. Perhaps nothing is more devastating than discovering animals left behind in the cruelest ways.
That’s exactly what happened in New York, when a passerby spotted an old cardboard box moving in a parking lot. Concerned, they alerted the team at Ten Lives Club, who rushed to investigate.
Inside the box, rescuers found three tiny kittens huddled together, scared and starving. Next to them lay a cat bed — a clear sign that they had been deliberately abandoned.
“The box was basically closed and there was a cat bed inside, so we know this was no accident,” Ten Lives Club shared. “The kittens were terrified and starving. This is unacceptable.” 💔
Rescuers searched the area and soon spotted the kittens’ mother nearby. She had been watching closely from a distance, refusing to leave her babies. With patience and care, the team gathered the little family and brought them safely to the shelter.
The kittens were later placed in a loving foster home, where they are now receiving warmth, food, and the gentle care they need to grow strong. Their mother remains at the shelter, where she’s resting, recovering, and preparing for her own fresh start.
Sadly, Ten Lives Club says that abandonment cases like this are far too common — and even appear to be increasing. That’s why they urge anyone struggling to care for their pets to call their surrender line instead of leaving animals in dangerous situations.
“If you ever find yourself unable to care for your cats or kittens, please call our surrender line,” the organization wrote. “We will work with you. There is ALWAYS a better way.”
Thanks to the kindness of strangers and the dedication of rescuers, these kittens and their mom now have a chance at a life full of love — instead of being left to fend for themselves in a box.
