From Death Row To Pure Joy: Deaf Shelter Dog “Flies” Into His New Life

For eight long months, Dharma Lorenz volunteered with a sweet pup named Satchi. She grew to love him, but then came the heartbreaking news: the overcrowded shelter had placed Satchi on the euthanasia list, and he had just 24 hours left.

“I raced out of work to get him,” Dharma said in a video for The Dodo. With no time to waste, she rushed to save his life.

At first, Satchi was terrified. In the car, he shook with fear, not understanding what was happening. But the moment he stepped paw into Dharma’s home and realized he was safe — everything changed.

Suddenly, Satchi’s fear melted into pure happiness. He ran, leapt, and bounced around the house with such joy that it looked like he was flying.

That night, he finally curled up and fell asleep — wearing the biggest smile.

“Deaf dogs, especially Satchi, don’t fall asleep easily unless they feel truly safe,” Dharma explained. “Seeing that moment … selfishly, it’s the best feeling in the world.” 💖

Satchi, who is deaf, joined Dharma’s already-special pack of deaf rescue pups. He fit in instantly, as if he had always been meant to be there. “They definitely understand each other on a deeper level,” Dharma said.

Now, Satchi soars through life — flying at the beach, zooming around the house, and leaping with endless joy. Each jump is his way of saying how grateful he is for his second chance.

“No matter how much he flies,” Dharma said, “it always brings a smile to our faces.”
