Finding a forever home isn’t so different from making it to the big leagues — just ask Solomon Thomas, NFL star and third overall draft pick in 2017. He knows that sometimes, all you need is a chance to be chosen. That's why he teamed up with The Dodo to help one very special shelter dog, Banksy, chase his own dream: finding a family.
“It’s draft season for football players,” Solomon said, smiling in a video for The Dodo. “A lot of guys are out there chasing their dreams. And right now, we’re working to get Banksy drafted into a forever home.”
In Dallas, where Solomon now plays for the Cowboys, the two athletes — one human, one four-legged — met in a backyard to train for Banksy’s big moment.
They started with a shuttle run. Solomon hid treats under colorful cones, cheering Banksy on as he sniffed them out with determination.
"Record time!" Solomon laughed, as Banksy finished in just over 31 seconds.
Next up was a friendly game of football fetch. Banksy impressed his coach by completing four throws in under two minutes.
"That’s not bad at all, Banksy!" Solomon encouraged.
For the final drill, Solomon decided to give his new buddy a break — and take on a challenge himself. Grabbing an oversized football, he aimed for a target that, when hit, would release a shower of treats for Banksy. It only took a few tries before treats rained down, and Banksy eagerly gathered his rewards.
Then came the moment of true celebration: Solomon awarded Banksy his very own MVP medal — Most Valuable Pit Bull.
"Most valuable puppy!" Solomon said proudly, patting Banksy’s head.
After all the hard work, it was time for a well-deserved snack. Inside, Solomon and Banksy whipped up some yogurt bowls before heading back out for a picnic under the Texas sun. As Banksy tucked into his treat, Solomon opened up about another important topic — mental health.
"As an athlete, mental health is huge for me," Solomon shared. "Dealing with competition, failure, pressure — it’s not easy. I practice positive self-talk, meditation, journaling, and I see a therapist. It’s about giving yourself grace and asking for help when you need it."
Solomon knows the power of having a loyal companion by your side. He and his girlfriend have a French Bulldog who is a trained service dog, offering support through life’s toughest moments.
Now, Banksy is ready to bring that same love and strength to a family of his own. After watching his spirit and heart in action, Solomon is confident:
"He's gonna find his team. I just know it."
