Kuno, a brave military working dog, has become a symbol of courage and loyalty after risking his life to save British soldiers during a critical mission. His incredible act of heroism earned him the prestigious Dickin Medal, the highest honor awarded to animals for their service.
Kuno’s heroic journey reached its pinnacle during a raid on an al-Qaeda base. The soldiers were pinned down by insurgents armed with grenades and machine guns. With no regard for his own safety, Kuno sprang into action. Dodging a hail of bullets, he charged at the enemy, disrupting their attack and giving his human companions the chance to regain control of the situation.
Though the mission was a success, Kuno paid a heavy price for his bravery. He sustained severe injuries, including gunshot wounds to his hind legs. His injuries were so severe that he required life-saving treatment at the U.S. Army Veterinary Treatment Facility.
Unfortunately, one of his paws had to be amputated, but this setback didn’t deter Kuno’s indomitable spirit. He became the first military dog in the U.K. to receive a prosthetic leg, allowing him to regain mobility.
After retiring from service, Kuno was adopted by a loving family, where he now enjoys a well-deserved life of comfort and happiness. His story doesn’t just highlight his remarkable bravery—it also underscores the incredible bond between service animals and their human counterparts.
Since the Dickin Medal’s inception by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), only 72 animals have received this honor, including 35 other dogs, 32 World War II messenger pigeons, four horses, and one cat.
British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace praised Kuno’s extraordinary valor, stating, “Kuno’s actions saved lives. This medal is a fitting recognition of his service and the invaluable role military dogs play in our safety and security.”
Kuno now spends his days enjoying a peaceful retirement, basking in the love and care of his adoptive family. His legacy of courage, sacrifice, and loyalty will forever inspire admiration.
Thank you, Kuno, for your selflessness and unwavering dedication. You are a true hero.
