Morgan, an 18-year-old dachshund, has defied the odds and is living his best life. After being surrendered to Lee County Domestic Animal Services (LCDAS) in Fort Myers, Florida, following the death of his owner, Morgan found a second chance thanks to the team at Senior Paws Sanctuary (SPS). Recognizing that Morgan, with his senior status, might have a limited time left, the shelter reached out to SPS to see if they could provide him with a loving foster home.

Kate Reidy, the founder of SPS, told: “When we heard about Morgan, we knew we had to help. I went to meet him, and I instantly fell in love.” Morgan moved into Kate's home alongside her 10-year-old dog, Charlie. Initially, Kate anticipated Morgan would be slow and sleepy given his age, but he surprised everyone.
“I joke that Morgan has Benjamin Button disease,” Kate says. “He’s more energetic and active than I could have imagined. Over the last year, his personality has really blossomed.”
Morgan settled quickly into his new home, and Kate made sure he could access the couch and bed at his own pace. He loved exploring his surroundings, seeking out new smells and cuddling with his humans. Kate describes him as a dog who loves the spotlight, always seeking affection and attention.
To help Morgan make the most of his golden years, Kate created a bucket list for him, and he’s been crossing off items with enthusiasm. Some of his highlights include flying on a plane, meeting a police sergeant and becoming a Junior Deputy, attending a baseball game, sitting on a motorcycle, and even meeting Santa Claus.
"He loves discovering new places and meeting new people. Every trip is an adventure for him, filled with new smells and sights," says Kate. "He thrives on the attention and affection he gets along the way."
Morgan still has a few dreams left to fulfill, including riding in a hot air balloon, attending a dog spa day, and meeting Ellen DeGeneres. With his 19th birthday approaching, his greatest wish is to receive birthday cards from people all over the world. Kate jokingly adds, “And if anyone could include a dollar or two in those cards, he’d be happy to donate it to his friends at Senior Paws Sanctuary!”
While many dogs his age would be content to spend their days napping, Morgan continues to embrace life with joy and excitement. His bucket list may be almost complete, but his zest for life is far from over. Kate and Morgan will keep checking off new experiences, proving that age is just a number.
