Cardi's Second Chance After 4 Years of Waiting

Cartier, a sweet dog who had endured more than her share of hardship, was surrendered to a New York City shelter in September 2023. Her family claimed they no longer had time for her, leaving her confined to a crate for most of her life. This constant isolation left poor Cartier, nicknamed Cardi, with deep anxiety. Thankfully, Rebound Hounds stepped in, pulling her from the shelter, and soon, she found herself in the care of a compassionate foster mom who understood her struggles.

Katy Brink, the executive editor at The Dodo, and her husband Collin immediately connected with Cardi’s situation. Katy herself struggles with anxiety and never imagined she’d find someone who truly understood — until she met Collin. Now, the couple was determined to show Cardi that same empathy and love.

Despite their best efforts, Cardi's current foster home isn't a long-term solution for her. With two other dogs in the house, it’s just not the calm environment Cardi needs. While she’s been making incredible progress, particularly on her walks where she’s learning to stay calm around other dogs, she clearly longs for a home where she doesn’t have to share her space. For over a year now, Cardi has been waiting for her forever family — but for reasons unknown, no one has come forward.

"Cardi would thrive in a quiet home with someone who enjoys sharing their daily routines and walks with her," Katy shared. "She doesn’t have separation anxiety, but she’ll truly blossom as the only dog in the house, where she can relax completely. She’s such an easygoing dog who just loves to hang out with her people.”

Though Cardi’s not high-maintenance, she does have some special needs that require a bit of thought and planning. After spending her first four years confined to a crate, many things are still new and can feel overwhelming. However, with the support of her foster parents, Cardi has been working hard to overcome her anxiety and continues to make great strides.

“She’s not vocal or aggressive around new dogs or people, but she stays on high alert,” Katy explained. “When she’s near something that triggers her anxiety, she might pull on her leash or struggle to focus, even if her favorite treats are right there. But she’s working so hard, and it makes her all the more special because she’s trying with everything she has.”

Anxiety may be a part of Cardi’s story, but it’s far from the most interesting thing about her. She’s smart, quirky, and surprisingly empathetic. She’ll zoom around the kitchen for no reason, play with her toys while lying on her back, and stay glued to your side like the best Velcro dog you could ask for. She loves a good hike just as much as she adores a cozy couch cuddle. Cardi’s personality is so lovable — she just needs someone to see it.

“The dogs no one wants are the ones who bring the most joy,” Katy said.

Cardi has been waiting for more than a year, hoping to find a family who will love her unconditionally. This holiday season, she dreams of spending her days in a home where she’s cherished for exactly who she is, giving back all the love she has in return.
