Two years ago, a heart-wrenching message from Evelyn Flores' boyfriend turned her world upside down. Outside his workplace in Mexico, he had spotted a small black-and-white dog sitting forlornly on the roadside, abandoned and utterly alone — or so it seemed.
Beside the pup lay a plastic bag filled with dog toys, likely all that remained of her past life. It was clear she had been left behind, cast away by the very people who once cared for her. Despite the heartache, the little dog clung to the hope that her family would return for her.
Unable to help immediately, Flores vowed to return the next morning. When she arrived at the same spot, her heart sank. The dog was still there, patiently waiting for a reunion that would never come. But the situation had worsened overnight.
“Someone had stolen the bag of toys,” Flores later shared. “They left the bag behind, completely empty.”
The bag, once filled with the last remnants of the dog's old life, was now her only bed. The loyal dog refused to leave, her eyes scanning the road, waiting for the family that had forsaken her.
“The little dog was still waiting for her family to come back,” Flores said, her voice heavy with disbelief. “I don’t understand how anyone could be so heartless. It’s inhumane.”
Though her home was already filled with the laughter and love of eight dogs, Flores knew she couldn’t leave this poor pup behind. She took her in, offering her safety, warmth, and the love she so desperately deserved. She named her Dulce, Spanish for “sweet,” because of her gentle and affectionate nature.
“I named her Dulce because she’s so loving, so grateful, and incredibly obedient,” Flores explained.
Initially, Flores thought she might find a new home for Dulce, but something unexpected happened — a deeper bond grew. It wasn’t long before Flores realized that Dulce had already found her forever home.
Two years have passed since that fateful day, and Dulce has never looked back. She no longer waits for the family that abandoned her, and her days are now filled with love, comfort, and endless care. The once frail, abandoned pup is now healthy and happy.
“We try to give her as much love as possible because we know she was mistreated,” Flores said. “She came to us so skinny, and now she’s chubby and full of life.”
While Dulce has been given a new lease on life, Flores and her family feel like they’re the ones who have been truly blessed.
“It’s been a blessing to have her,” Flores said, smiling.
