Missouri Rescuer Climbs Into Sewer To Save Terrified Senior Dog — And Brings Him Back To His Family

 

At 13 years old, Nico should have been enjoying his golden years surrounded by warmth, comfort, and people who loved him.

Instead, the elderly German Shepherd was allegedly abandoned outside a supermarket in Pembroke Pines, Florida, in a heartbreaking case that has left many people wondering how anyone could treat a senior dog this way.

According to authorities, surveillance footage captured a delivery driver allegedly throwing Nico from the back of a box truck after making a delivery at a Sedano’s supermarket. The driver then reportedly returned to the truck and drove away, leaving the helpless dog behind.

Nico was completely dependent on humans. At his age and in his condition, he had no way to protect himself.

A Senior Dog in Terrible Condition

When Nico was eventually found and taken into the care of Broward County Animal Care, rescuers discovered just how badly he had been suffering.

The 13-year-old German Shepherd was severely malnourished, with a badly matted coat. Veterinarians also found signs of advanced hip dysplasia and determined that Nico has cancer.

Most heartbreaking of all, Nico was unable to walk.

This was not a young, healthy dog who could simply survive on his own. He was an elderly companion whose body was failing and who desperately needed medical care, food, shelter, and compassion.

Instead, investigators say, he had been abandoned.

An Investigation Leads to an Arrest

Authorities arrested 60-year-old Humberto Exposito in connection with the incident.

He faces charges including aggravated animal cruelty, animal abandonment, and confining an animal without sufficient air ventilation. A judge set his bond at $12,000 and ordered him not to own or possess animals while the case continues.

It is important to remember that these are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

But regardless of what happens in court, one thing is painfully clear:

Nico is suffering, and he needs help.

Nico Deserves a Different Ending

Senior dogs spend years giving us something priceless.

They offer companionship when we're lonely. They greet us when we come home. They stay beside us through good days and bad ones. And they ask for very little in return.

When they grow old, become sick, or can no longer run and play like they once did, that should be the time when we give them even more patience and care.

They cannot tell us where it hurts.

They cannot ask for a glass of water.

They cannot explain that they're scared.

They simply trust us.

Nico deserved that trust to be honored.

Today, Nico is receiving medical treatment and compassionate care through Broward County Animal Care.

After everything this elderly dog has endured, we can only hope that his story takes a more peaceful turn.

He deserves a soft bed.

He deserves nutritious food.

He deserves gentle hands.

He deserves to feel safe.

And most importantly, he deserves to know that he has not been forgotten.

At 13 years old, Nico may have already given the world many years of loyalty and love.
