In late May, the Humane Society of Lebanon County (HSLC) in Pennsylvania received an urgent call from local police and rescue workers about a dog trapped in a storm drain. Initially, the rescuers feared the worst. When they removed the drain grate, however, the frail dog slowly lifted his head, showing he was still alive.
A volunteer and staff member from HSLC immediately rushed to the scene, prepared to provide medical assistance. What they found was heartbreaking: a severely emaciated dog curled into a tight ball, teetering on the edge of life. With gentle care, the team extricated the dog and transported him to an emergency veterinary clinic for immediate treatment.
Reuniting a Lost Soul
The dog, a 15-year-old named Buddy, had been missing for three weeks. His owner was quickly located, but despite efforts to reunite Buddy with his original home, it became clear that he would require special care to recover fully. Buddy’s well-being became the primary focus.
A Long Road to Recovery
Buddy’s condition was dire when he arrived at the emergency clinic. He required three days of intensive, life-saving care. Over time, his health began to improve, but his advanced age presented unique challenges. Buddy has ongoing medical needs, including follow-up appointments, ultrasounds, x-rays, and a consultation with an eye specialist. Due to his age, sedation for procedures is not an option, making his care even more delicate.
To ensure Buddy receives the best chance at recovery, HSLC is committed to covering the costs of his medical care, food, and supplements. The shelter is now searching for a foster home where Buddy can live comfortably with patient caregivers who can provide the love and attention he deserves.
Buddy’s Personality Shines Through
Despite his ordeal, Buddy has shown incredible resilience. He is a gentle soul who gets along well with cats and thrives in the company of calm, well-mannered dogs. His sweet nature has touched the hearts of everyone at the shelter.
How You Can Help
In a world often filled with negativity and hardship, Buddy’s story is a reminder of the power of kindness and compassion. HSLC is determined to find Buddy a forever home where he can experience the love and security he deserves in his golden years.
