Last month, Stillwater Animal Welfare (SAW) rescuers rescued two dogs found running together on a busy street in Oklahoma City. While it’s not uncommon for SAW officers to rescue multiple dogs at once, it was clear from the start that these two had something special.
“They traveled together, sticking close to each other through who knows how many streets and miles,” said Ashley Jerks, an animal care officer at SAW. “You could tell right away that they had a bond.”
The pair were named Bonnie and Clyde, fitting for their inseparable nature. Even in the shelter, the two stayed close, comforting each other as they adjusted to their new surroundings. They were both dealing with heartworm but received medical care, cuddling together to ease their stress.
For the next few days, they continued to offer each other companionship and support. Bonnie and Clyde seemed like they would never be apart, but reality struck when the time came for them to be put up for adoption.
A welfare officer, seeing Bonnie’s loneliness, posted a picture of her on the shelter’s social media, hoping to find a new family for her. The post read: "Bonnie has been lonely since her brother was adopted, and she definitely misses having a sibling to hold."
The response was swift and heartfelt. Just days later, Bonnie’s dream came true.
“She was posted on a Friday, and by Monday, someone had adopted her,” said Jerks.
Bonnie had found her forever home, and her new family couldn’t be more excited. Brayden Roth, her new owner, shared on social media: “It’s already settling in! Bonnie’s going to have the best life, full of adventures with her blue high-heeled big sister.”
Though Bonnie will always have a special place in her heart for Clyde, she’s now ready to create new memories. Her journey has come full circle, from a street pup to a cherished member of a loving family. And as for Clyde, he’s doing great in his new home, but the bond they shared will forever remain.
Bonnie’s story is a reminder that no matter where you start, there’s always a place where love and companionship can help heal and bring new beginnings.
