Speeding through Bolivia in a taxi, a woman named Krista spotted a blur of fur dashing behind her car. It was a dog, chasing after the vehicle, weaving through the streets, trying to keep up.
It would have been easy for Krista to ignore it—she was on vacation with her friends, and they were set to leave in a few weeks. But as an animal lover, she couldn’t bring herself to turn a blind eye.
“He just wouldn’t stop following us,” Krista recalled in a video for The Dodo. “I was like, ‘Hey, guys, can we please stop?’”
Krista began caring for the friendly stray, naming him Chase. She fed him and let him travel with her and her friends as they continued exploring the country.
“From the start, I formed this deep bond with him,” Krista said.
When the time came to leave, Krista realized she didn’t want to say goodbye to her furry companion. However, she knew bringing a dog back to the U.S. from Bolivia would involve months of paperwork. Reluctantly, she arranged for Chase to stay at a local rescue facility for street dogs and promised him they’d meet again.
Seven months later, Krista kept her promise.
“Seeing Chase again was incredible,” Krista shared. “He remembered me, and we were both so happy.”
Now back in the U.S. with Chase by her side, Krista felt a huge sense of relief. She had done it.
As for Chase, he quickly adapted to his new life.
“When he first arrived, he felt completely at home,” Krista said.
These days, Krista and Chase are inseparable, traveling across the country in a cozy camper van.
“I couldn’t ask for a better travel buddy and companion,” Krista said. “No matter how far I go, I’ll always have my best friend right by my side.”
