When Kaitlin Devoto first agreed to foster a dog, she had no idea what to expect — in fact, she knew nothing at all. Speaking to Loveanimalsclub, she admitted: "I didn’t know the dog’s gender or age. The first time we saw her was when she arrived in Cincinnati, and I picked her up."
At the pickup center in New York, Kaitlin laid eyes on a stunning red poodle. She noticed the dog appeared to be lactating, but assumed it was a result of a recent litter.
“It’s common to receive puppy mill moms still producing milk,” Kaitlin explained. “Once their puppies are weaned, the mothers are considered ‘no longer useful.’”
The poodle also seemed severely underfed, but Kaitlin had a plan to nourish her back to health. She took the dog home, unaware of the surprise that was about to unfold.
Four days into fostering, Kaitlin woke up to an unexpected scene: the poodle had given birth overnight, and a tiny puppy was nestled beside her in the dog bed. Completely taken by surprise, Kaitlin checked for more puppies, but it turned out there was only one.
Realizing she needed to act quickly, Kaitlin ensured both the mom and her newborn were comfortable, setting up cozy blankets for them. Upon examining the puppy, she noticed he looked like a little chicken nugget, which led to his new name, "Chicky Nug."
As for the mother, Kaitlin decided to keep the naming theme going, settling on "Mickey D" for the poodle.
Time passed, and Chicky Nug started to grow rapidly, turning into an energetic and playful pup. "He loves to run around, do zoomies, and nibble on toes and toys," Kaitlin shared. Mickey D also began to come out of her shell, becoming more playful and outgoing with each passing day.
For now, the little family is still with Kaitlin, enjoying their time in her care. However, they will soon move on to their forever homes through the adoption process with Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue in New York.
Though it’s not certain if they’ve found their new families yet, there’s no doubt these lovable dogs will make someone very happy.
