For years, Violet, a Pit Bull, suffered with a heavy chain padlocked around her neck, her spirit weighed down as much as her body. She was one of five dogs on a property in Miguel County, New Mexico, who were seemingly forgotten and left to endure years of neglect. But one day, a woman driving by noticed Violet’s dire situation, and her compassion sparked a chain of events that would change Violet’s life forever.
Realizing that it was illegal to keep dogs chained without supervision, the woman contacted the Animal Welfare Coalition of Northwestern New Mexico. Shortly after, the county sheriff’s department, in collaboration with NMDOG, stepped in to rescue Violet and the other dogs.
NMDOG quickly discovered that the dogs had been essentially abandoned, with their owner in jail on unrelated charges and no one else to care for them. When Violet was brought in for a vet examination, her skin was found to be sunburned, pink, and red. She also suffered from flystrike, a horrific condition where maggots infest an animal’s flesh, attracted by damp fur, urine, and feces.
Traumatized and fearful of humans, Violet would flinch at any quick movement, hinting at a violent past. However, thanks to the patient care and loving encouragement of rescue volunteers and her foster family, Violet slowly began to trust people again.
As the days passed, Violet’s true nature began to shine through. Her gentle, sweet personality emerged as she bonded with the vet staff and volunteers, who she adored snuggling with. She also discovered the joys of play, especially when she got her first stuffed animals. A raccoon squeaky toy became her favorite, bringing out her playful side.
Violet found happiness in other simple pleasures, like going for walks and forming deep friendships with Hops, another rescued dog, and her foster sibling, Blaze.
But Violet’s story doesn’t end with her recovery. NMDOG discovered that she possesses a unique “superpower”—her ability to make everyone around her smile and laugh. And she has an adorable trick: she can move her ears independently, sometimes using both of her superpowers at once!
Seeing Violet transform from a neglected, abused dog into a healthy, joyful pup is nothing short of miraculous. Now, all she needs is a loving forever home where she can continue to spread joy and love to those around her.
